Erik Huggers
BBC
Director of BBC Future Media & Technology, BBC
BBC's digital guy.
Huggers is responsible for ensuring millions of Brits’ TV license fees are put to good use online, from the iPlayer to the upcoming Project Canvas launch.
He has announced that the BBC will soon be offering an “Open iPlayer” for other broadcasters to use, and whilst it hasn’t been given full sign-off just yet it’s believed that opening up the API is a necessary act for the publicly-funded project.
Similarly, the BBC hopes to work with other networks on Project Canvas, which will be an on-demand service available on TVs through the use of an Ethernet-connected set-top box.
They’ve already signed up ITV, Channel 5 and and BT, with a launch date not yet announced.
